It would be great if ads could be better targeted. I guess google and facebook are trying very hard in that direction. A friend of mine told me he start seeing seomoz banners all over the place since he started doing some seo searches. But it is still at an early stage.
I think nothing could replace ppc like adwords which is built arround the concept of user intent.

Hmmm... I think there should be an element of targeting used most of the time. Dull? I would love to be advertised music, films, games, events, gigs, iplayers, speakers, tvs all in the style I love. A new futuristic sci-fi novel out? Excellent, I'll be buying that. I don't think life would be dull, quite the opposite. You'd always see ads for stuff you're interested in. sure, they'll be irrelevant stuff but by keeping it to a minimum I think both the industry and recipients of advertising will both profit.

Less annoying ads, more responsive advertising, more profitable businesses, happier customers.

Although, as aBay have found out, the higher the targeting, the less room for serendipity. eBay (allegedly) detuned their search so that mistakes were made and muggins here who was looking at racing bikes, got shown a toaster. Ooh! brilliant! I need a toaster! Buy it now...

Hard to measure how much this kind of impulse accounts for, as people don;t know what they don't know they want. yes, I'd rather targeted ads, but not just targeted ads. How dull would life be then?

Well written. As generic ads become more intrusive, developers are making a fortune in blocking them. People not only want fewer ads, but they are willing to pay a premium to get away from them.
