Microsoft’s Spam Email to the Unsubscribed

I thought this was rather amusing – I’m listed as unsubscribed (and have been for some time) from Microsoft’s promotional information and surveys email list, so what did they do? They sent me an email to check whether I’m sure I still want to be unsubscribed!

Maybe we should try this with our customers, once every couple of months just send an email to all the unsubscribees, just to check they still don’t want to receive our spam. Which they’ve already asked not to. Which we would have just spammed them about. Quite hilarious really, this would never pass within the general B2C marketplace, and it’s likely we’d end up in deep water over sending unsolicited emails to consumers.

If you’ve selected unsubscribe from a companies email communication, then they should never email market to you again. Email marketing solutions check and re-check sends against unsubscribe lists before they go out to make sure they follow strict guidelines set down for this. It’s never acceptable to communicate to people who have been clear in stating they want to receive no more communication from you in this medium.
